1. Company and project context

  • Who you are: company name, website, market presence. A sentence is enough.
  • Target markets: which countries the product will sell in. This drives certification scope — CE and RoHS for the EU, PSE for Japan, FCC for the US — and those are applied per target market and confirmed per model, so the factory needs to know up front.
  • Sales channels: Amazon, retail shelf, direct-to-consumer. Channel affects packaging requirements, drop-test expectations, and labeling.

2. Product definition

  • Product category and reference model, if you have one. Referencing an existing platform (for example, a specific model from the factory’s catalog) lets the factory quote from a known cost base.
  • Key specifications you require: blade material, motor type, power system (AA battery, USB rechargeable), waterproof rating, runtime, attachments and comb sizes.

3. Customization scope

List every customization you expect, because each has cost and lead-time implications: logo printing or engraving, custom housing colors, retail gift-box packaging, manuals in specific languages, comb and accessory combinations, or custom blade-head combos on multifunctional platforms. 4. Quantities and forecast

  • First order quantity — and be honest. Factories quote tiered pricing, and a fictional 50,000-unit forecast attached to a 500-unit first order damages credibility.
  • Twelve-month forecast with your own confidence level attached.

  • Did they answer every section, or only the price line? Partial answers now predict partial communication after you have paid a deposit.
  • Did they push back anywhere? A factory that tells you a spec combination is a bad idea — and explains why — is engaging as a manufacturing partner, not a vendor.
  • Are certifications confirmed for your model, or asserted generally? “We have CE” is not the same as “this model, in this configuration, will carry CE and RoHS, confirmed per project.”
  • Is the quality process described concretely? Compare a vague “strict QC” against specifics like blades hand-checked after grinding, blade pairs matched rather than randomly assembled, cutting performance verified batch by batch, and optical inspection before packing. Concreteness is checkable; vagueness is not.

What happens after the RFQ?

A good RFQ compresses the path from first contact to samples in hand. The typical sequence: the factory responds with pricing and clarifying questions; you refine the specification together; samples of the existing platform ship in 7–14 days; you evaluate them; then order confirmation starts the 45–60 day production clock.
